Mind blown! Reading this morning and finding out that Phenibut and gabapentin cause euphoria and have a high abuse potential profile!! Anyone ever gotten high on these or heard of it happening to someone? Adderall?
I don't seem to be able to get euphoria from anything. Not that I want to... I am just so surprised to find this out and subsequently dying of curiosity in regards to pwn. TIA!
Nick
I don't know about the first two you mention... There was a time period where I was really struggling and I was taking Much more than recommended doses of Adderall. Personally, I never felt "euphoric" during those times. If anything, I felt like I was going mad, lol.
I can recall feeling euphoric only a handful of times during my entire life. I would do anything, (short of negative abuse), to feel euphoric more often. Sometimes I wonder if I prevent myself from feeling good... Even when I've taken recreational enhancers I have a hard time "letting the good times roll." ....sorry Christy for going off topic. Your post triggered my thoughts to explore what is standing in the way of euphoria... Thanks for the post!
David
The only euphoria I've ever felt was this weird "out of body" experience I had while running 30 miles in the desert to celebrate my birthday.

I don't get any high from Adderall and any of the "fun" side effects from medications. I take morphine, vicodin, other stuff, and get absolutely nothing from it.
There's a theory that PWNs are (fortunately? Unfortunate?) resistant to addiction. It's related to the hypocretin theory. Hypocretin is thought to be some sort of positive reinforcement neurotransmitter that is released to promote pleasure seeking behavior critical for life: eating, sex, happiness, etc. addiction is thought to be a product of an overactive hypocretin and dopamine axis. Well - we are thought to be deficient in both. All our meds are HUGELY prone to abuse, yet we simply use them at normal, therapeutic levels. We can't get high off them and if we try we are likely to collapse or feel strange (David's out of body experience).

I have always been able to stop opiates, cigarettes, alcohol, anything cold turkey without any hesitation - yet another super power of the PWN!!

Must be the odd one out. Went to rehab for my first time when I was 14. Struggled with cocaine, pills, mostly stimulants. I quit smoking 3 different times (6 months, 18 months, 5+ years) before it finally took this last time. It was really hard to quit, but I have no desire to smoke cigarettes ever again. Looking back my doc thinks I was just self medicating bc I was so tired. 13 years sober. I've taken gabapentin in the past and didn't notice anything good or bad.

I wish I could feel something good off of my meds!! I take xanax for social anxiety and it just makes me sleepy. Do understand how people get addicted to it. I also take concerta and Ritalin both daily. Still wondering how people get addicted because although it does what the doctor wants it to do, it makes me feel crappy at times. Not that feel good, I have tons of energy feeling!! Just I am awake and can function close to normal. Well what is NORMAL?? IDK Maybe we N's are normal!!

I felt euphoric after the birth of my son. I was given a shot of Demerol after he was out. Not sure if it was the med and/or natural opiods released to deal with the pain.
Chris
Umm that thing that makes us nearly immune to addiction is the reason for your missing out on that state of Adderall high dear....that would be among the rewards we don't get because of this disorder
Iris
I've heard that people who actually NEED adderall don't get high from it.
Mari
I have never tried or feel Adderall high. I felt euphoric for about 5 minutes after my first dose of dexamphetamine, but never again since. I feel human, functional, like, have you ever seen that "Claritin clear commercial"? but not high or drugged at all. If I take it and drink too much caffeine I can get manicy though. I also went years without diagnosis. Euphoria was pleasant for a couple minutes, but I have never liked being high and would not want that as a constant state. Does it seem to be interfering with your judgement? or your reactions? During those 5 minutes I mentioned I felt damn good and 7784 probably appeared pretty normal, just happy, to the outside world but I didn't have to make decisions or assess situations and take appropriate action.

I guess I just feel awake and clear headed. What is euphoria if not just being awake and able to live life? Is euphoria more like a state of being "Adderall high" but non-functional?
Also, I used to experiment with drugs Years ago but decided that wasn't for me. Ironically, I never tried adderall. It's now odd that it is the one drug that makes me feel "normal" and unlike other drugs, I have zero desire to take more than is the optimal/medicinal dose

I think in the beginning it's euphoria. But being awake is a beautiful thing and I do think that's how people without N feel most of the time. Imagine how bright colors are to someone used to living in the dark. That's us.

Wait.....I thought my pizza cravings were just because I was part ninja and part turtle.

Adderall euphoria is discribed as a feeling or state of intense excitement and happiness. You said you feel stable. To me this means maybe you don't feel euphoria, but you would know better than I would how you feel.

I was undiagnosed for over 7 years due to a very stupid primary care. My sleep doctor put me on nuvigil. The first day I took a low dose it gave me an anxiety attack for the entire day, and it was awful. The next day I tried half a pill. I still felt awful, even though it was just a little bit easier and didn't last as long. I still couldn't tolerlate the awful thoughts it gave me. I can't remember if I was drinking coffee with it though.

I went on Narcolepsy Network and made a post asking which med is best tolerated. People said adderall gives less side effects and I asked my doctor to prescribe it and she did. It worked well for many months but overtime I'm just developing a tolerance to it so it barely works anymore. I'm not willing to increase the dose either :( If I take a really low dose or don't take any adderall for a day, the next day I can't work or go to class because I have extreme fatigue and a horrible migraine.

I have found that to be true, too. I started on 15mg Adderall XR last February and every three months, increased my dose (up to 25mg). Then I switched to Modafinal and became totally depressed. I think there is something in adderrall that I have become dependent on or that my body needs to be normal. My doc says that's ok. Long story short- after going off adderrall for 1 week, I went back to my 25mg XR dose which was way way too strong. So for me, I now know that if I take a break from adderall, I will be tired and blah, and when I start again I should go down to a low dose again. I tried the IR and have found that makes my mood jump around so the XR is the smoothest way to stay awake and stabilize my mood

o I was a meth addict when I was 19 yrs .. And the ppl I ran with always wondered why I wasn't absolutely geeked out like them off a little I almost had to do triple the normal addict to feel any of the these feelings they had.. I did it 9 straight months losing an excessive amount of weight .. And when my mom gave me a tough love altimatum I came off quickly with hardly any withdrawals .. And always was able to say no.. I said that to say this.. One adderall makes a person who doesn't need it have an Adderall high, a meth like high.. To feel that same sense I would have to have a triple dose..
I am now prescribed methylphenidate .. 20 mg extended release.. After first being prescribed 10mg instant release 2x a day.. The extended release takes almost 2 hours to work then gives me about 4 hours the instant release was the business.. And hope to get prescribed it again.. It gave me focus energy and about 9 solid hours of normalcy.. Thanks for reading

Adderall has given me my life back by helping me stay awake and focused at my job. I have never experienced euphoria while taking it...that's crazy!! I'd much rather be a productive citizen than one who lays in bed all day.
Karah
It did that for me too for the first few years that I was on it. But after being on 60 mg or higher for over 13 years I have developed such a tolerance to it that it barely works at all anymore. It does at least prevent me from spontaneously falling asleep during the day anymore. But just because I'm up doesn't mean that I'm alert or focused. I'm barely able to get out of bed anymore these days. But I agree with you. When it worked for me, I was able to be a productive person. Not as productive as I was before my N/IH diagnosis but at least I was able to participate in and contribute to my life. Sadly, not so much these days. But even during the time that it was working at it's absolute best for me, I NEVER, EVER, EVER experienced even a moment of euphoria on it! I wish you continued success!
Nori
Adderall is the only thing that has worked for me, and I've tried all the others. The worst for me was Xyrem...it sent me to the ER. You are right about developing a tolerance though. 15 years ago I was on 20mg per day and now I'm on 60mg per day. Without it I'm a complete zombie, so I feel your pain. My neurologist's assistant also has narcolepsy and she added a small dosage of Dexedrine XL to my Adderall and it has helped a lot. I hope you can find something that will work for you because I know how bad it can be to want to sleep all day

My past was rough, but it's my past so don't judge.
I use to sell my Adderall back in highschool. It does make people high. Like METH but not as bad as meth.
There is a reason people pay $20+ for A pill.
Goo
yes, people certainly can get high off of it (usually people who don't need it). I think that's what's so frustrating about it. Adderall is the only thing that has worked regularly for me but I get stereotyped as a drug user or people think I'm just trying to get high. Very annoying

Trigger Warning: I find it weird when people say amphetamines don't make them high. Even PWN. Our dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine receptors are still active. We may be tired behind the effects of the drug, but the side effects (euphoria being one of them) still happen. And yes, Adderall, aka mixed dextroamphetamine salts, is very close to methamphetamine. In fact, I've heard that Desoxyn, pharma grade meth, is actually smoother and less crashy at therapeutic dosages.
Max
Adderall, Desoxyn and Ritalin can ALL cause psychosis in sufficent doses due to their addictive psychostimulant effects through dopamine receptors. Adderall is amphetamine, which is a form of speed. The weaker and cheaper street speed often contains a decent amount of it, rather than meth. Desoxyn IS pure methamphetamine.
